For me to get mine out, I had to wedge a tool
in the tube against the tip of the screw...
& then I mumbled a lot while using a nut driver
to turn the screw....it took a while, but finally
I had mumbled enough, & it un-screwed. :?

 

Glue the phillips tip onto the screw......super glue is fast and easy or silicone works but takes longer.
That way you can apply back pressure while unscrewing it.
A hammer will get the screw off the phillips tip when done.

I have a stupid problem and probably need a stupid answer, but I am stupified at it all. I have a 400 seat I need to work on and the backrest has to come out. However, the screws are still in the pipe and it wont slide out. The problem is that the screw spins all day in both directions, but will not back out. I have used a handheld screwdriver and an electric screwdriver, but it will not fall out. The + for the screw tip is not stripped, just the threads. I tried a drill bit to force it out, but that does not work. It basically renders the seat useless.

I have tried needle nose pliers, but they can not get a good grip especially since it's protected by the hole above it.

What do I do?

If you can get to the flange on the screw, I have luck in such situations where a staple puller wedged under the flange and then back it out with back preasure under the screw.
Ye 'Ole "drill her out" seems to always work in a pinch.

The staple puller won't reach in the hole. Tried the drill bit, but the screw just spins.

Seems like I will be buying some of the welding compound at Lowe's today and just weld it to a phillips bit. I have several lying around so I can chuck it when I am done.

 

Try a pair of electricians wire cutters (*****) under the screw head as you back it out with the screw driver.

 

The way the screw is buried down in there you can not get anything under to wedge it up while turning. Not sure if a set of "ViceLock" needle nose would fit. If all else fails, pry it sideways and snap it off, then center punch the mangled area down. Then there's C4 and Det-cord.

 

If you need to drill it out, then you just have to prevent the screw from spinning.

A dab of superglue may be all you need, but will only give so much hold. You'll need to be very careful when drilling to avoid any form of "catch" which will break the glue's slender hold. If this fails, maybe a fast setting epoxy? It holds much better, but that gets more difficult to break the head off once the screw is taken care of.

I've also had success in drilling out stripped threads with a very heavy pressure on the drill, and high speed. The screw will spin initially, but friction soon warms things up until you'll be able to cut. Not the prettiest method, and my well cost you a drill bit, but if you need it out bad enough.

take but a few minutes. If you don't have a dremel tool then you migh try a file.
