My last two motorcycles before these Suzuki's were both used, two years old, with a few thousand miles on the clock. I bought them from dealers, so the prior owner wasn't available to interrogate. They both ran perfectly. I got bored with the Honda Shadow after a couple of years, but I kept the Kawasaki Concours for 6 years and logged 66,000 miles on it.
So, I have no idea what went on with break in on either machine. And I really didn't much care. I took a good long test ride on each machine before purchase. They felt strong and smooth and sounded good. And, of course, I made the dealer do a basic maintenance including oil change before I took delivery.
I have not adhered to the recommended break-in on any of my bikes. I haven't overstressed them, I've tried to vary the rpms, and I've had the first service done on schedule. I'll be damned if I'll hold a machine to 4000 rpms for the first 500 miles - that makes no sense to me at all. But I don't redline the engine, or twist the throttle wide open either. I ride them the way they are normally going to be ridden, with a little more focus on varying rpms for the first couple of hundred miles. This has always worked out fine.
Ever test ride a bike? And then buy it. :? If a bike has been test ridden, it has been over 4000 rpms already....
