Yamaha Xmax Owners BEWARE!!! Smart Key Replacement

I own an Yamaha 2018 Xmax 300cc which I purchased in June of this year. In August, I lost my smart key or fob. Yamaha only provides one fob at time of purchase in my case.

Long story short.... if you lose your fob and didn't retain your "key ID card" that contains the smart key or fob coding numbers that came with your documentation -- expect expensive replacement costs. Unfortunately, when I purchased my Xmax from Rocky Mountain Plaza Motorsports in Colorado Springs... the sales rep never mentioned this little fact during my walk through, nor did I have this very important "key ID card" in my documentation. The work around is to replace the ignition, etc which involves three components which is mentioned in the owners' manual. Which I will gladly pay for if I could get my replacement fob in a timely matter....

Here's when things went really south in two areas... It turns out Yamaha does not retain these program code numbers or connect them to the Xmax VIN, nor does the dealership that sold the Xmax have the program code numbers either. This piece of information was never mentioned to me during the sales transaction. So if you don't have that "key ID card" you are screwed. Its about theft protection according to Yamaha Corp.

Here where its get really interesting... it turns out Yamaha doesn't even stock one of the three components needed to complete the ignition work around... In my situation, Yamaha Corp told me they are trying to "locate" one and don't any idea when the component will be available... the dealership told me maybe January of 2019... maybe (my Xmax has been at the dealership since the first week of September). I'm looking at six months or even longer without my Xmax. I should also mention the Xmax is my sole mode of transportation.. or for now was....

Sorry for your tale of woe. To purchase a new bike or scoot and not being able to ride it must be the pits. I almost purchased a Xmax from Ridenow Powersports here in Vegas but the quote they gave me for the out the door price with setup, freight and documentation fees was ridiculous. I found a left over 2016 Burgman at San Diego BMW and it was an agreed on price, tax and 80.00 documentation fee.

Well heck,

Nice bike but I can definitely see the Achilles heel there.

I'd think there'd be a way to read the code off the ECU or Immobilizer then program a new chip (two new chips...)
I'd also think that Yamaha'd have a record of it back at their corporate office.

Have you checked directly with Yamaha, & maybe pinged a local locksmith?

Yes I contacted Yamaha Corp when I first lost my fob.... the two Yamaha dealerships in the area both hmm and hawwed and weren't sure if they could replace it... it took a Yamaha Corp customer rep to intercede on my behalf and talked with the dealership.. then suddenly the dealership changed their tune and would gladly help me. It turned out to be the same dealership I purchased my XMAX from... I was trying to avoid them.. but it was the only game in town so to speak that could help me.

After I filed a BBB complaint in CA it was then Kathy from Customer Relations told me about the component needed to complete the work around ... Yamaha Corp was trying to "locate" the component and no idea when much needed component would be available (the dealership told me Jan of 2019?)... Yamaha Corp doesn't even stock the part and apparently isn't being used anymore..... Kathy also informed me about the all important "key ID card" and how the sales rep is suppose to inform you of its importance. This is the first time I heard about this key ID card. My sales rep never mentioned the key ID card or the fact Yamaha (nor the dealership) retain the key code in their records or connect it to the XMAX VIN..... its all on you the new owner and this key ID card.... So now I'm stuck with "pat and charlie" to get around town or the kindness of friends to give me a ride.... (the XMAX was my sole mode of transportation)... screwed is what I am...

Yes I did... it was then I found out one, the sales rep should have informed me about the key ID card and its importance and how Yamaha does not retain the key program code nor does the dealership... and two, the much needed part isn't used anymore and Yamaha does not even carry it in its stock.....
I only found these two important bits of info after filing a BBB complaint against Yamaha Corp. The only thing Yamaha Corp did was offer a discount on one of the three parts needed to install a new starter/ignition system....its the work around if you don't have the program code or key ID card...

Why still stay with a dealer if the service is so poor? Thats at least 12 weeks as it is with no final date.

The xmax range in the uk is readily stolen and used as a pusher bike for other bike theft. The thieves buy an immobiliser emulator from ebay or elsewhere and away they go. Some are just plug and play although a bit of googling may indicate an issue for your particular model ? This type of fix would get you mobile.

Your other option is to use a company such as

https://www.autotronics.co.uk/yamah...max-immobiliser-transponder-recoding-and-replacement-motorbike-key-service.html

I would guess not knowing what similar facilites are available un the USA but would expect there must be a similar type company in existence who can offer a decode and recut service with a 7 day turnaround ?

I called several auto key replacement firms... none do scooters....

Yep I seriously considering doing a buy back on the Xmax and take whatever I get and purchase a Honda Forza ABS.... I know I'll lose money but what other option do I have...Yamaha Corp is no help... and the dealership only bitches about the "discount" they are giving to replace the whole starter/ignition system...

I live full-time in an RV and had no refundable reservations for six months in a Southern Cal RV resort beginning Dec.. so I had to leave Colorado Springs after the Thanksgiving holidays and head to CA... I waited three months in Colo. Springs to get a replacement fob (that was expensive $2400 on a rental car). Then was informed by Yamaha Corp (not the dealership) they were trying to "locate" the component to complete the starter/ignition replacement process... and of course Yamaha has no idea when the part would be available...(I'm picturing Yamaha calling around to elec. manufacturing plants in Japan to no avail) Yamaha doesn't stock the part anymore because Yamaha doesn't use the part anymore... the dealership is telling me Jan. 2019 the part will be available... I gather that's probably bullsh*t... so now I wait without a set of wheels to scoot around when I'm parked & SOL at RV parks....

XMAX owners beware....

I dont want to jump in feet first as I do not know the layout or operation of the ignition immobiliser on your bike. Having said that I assume you need items 35 and 36 on the attached page link.. I know its for a 2017 model but if you email MSP they may be able to confirm it fits a 2018 too ??? :-

https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/yamaha-parts/2017-x-max-300-scooters/electrical-1

I would think item 35 can be coded to the ecu and also to the fob (36) and I would guess a new purchase of 35 and 36 they would come with a new security code(s) which your dealer would be able to deal with and get the bike on the road again ? Its something you would have to confirm of course.

Again, it may not be that simple but you have to prod dealerships sometimes to get them to think outwith the box. The world is not that big thanks to the internet. :)

Wishing you a suitable and quick resolution to your problem.

PS by Yamaha corp, is that the USA importers or the factory in Japan ? Perhaps you need to shame the Japanese company direct ?? Honour often means a lot... ;-)

Well I hope you get some help soon. I have been involved in a few "Disco'ed" items over the years and had to modify something to piecemeal it together. I had to take 4 power supplies apart and make a unit to get 600 customers phone lines back in service because the 25 year old power supply was disco'ed.

But of all the active members, only about 10 own a Yamaha scooter.

Thats terrible! Yamaha didnt acknowledge the issue with my Yamaha Zuma 125 when it was 3 days out of warranty. Turns out is was an unprotected wire loom getting cut into by a sharp weld edge under the floor boards. I saw a newer Zuma with the floor removed and the loom was now protected/weld ground down..... so, I feel your pain. Anyways, with every new vehicle I always write the key code down. Inside the owners manual, and inside the service manual if I have one already. Not saying you did wrong, but having only one fob would be like me having only one key! No thanks, I do loose stuff. Also, your story reminds me of when I was shopping for a Piaggio product. "Make sure it has the red master key!" was the advice given. I cant believe how many sellers said they didnt have it, because they never needed it. I seems to be a very expensive issue if missing.

The good thing about Piaggio's "red key" is that it isn't needed for normal operation. Since it's only needed to reprogram the bike to accept new uncoded keys, it can be left in a nice safe place, and is thus less likely to be lost or left somewhere. This assumes you remember where that nice safe place you put it was, though...

Hiya, and I understand. I live in indonesia and doing it in English is crap, but much eaiser and doing it with street Indonesian, think Hawaiian pigeon, U get the point and Google God or any other tranlater. They dont tell U ****, although, I have always found reading the instructions first as best, everythink has its own quirks. EVERYONE, PHOTO YOU KEY # BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE DEALER, SEND AS AN ATTACHMENT TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS. Put it in the plastic toolkit under the seat. Take the key, put it on your key ring, key FOBS dont look cool, dont worry about it. Before you leave, order another fob, always nice to have a spare, under 50, and comes with new key number. Immeditaly get both fobs on the same "Security Key Code". Takes less than 30 minutes to have both fobs on the same code.

This is easy. Order a new fob, and when it arrives, have them reflash the ECU WITH THE NEW CODE, UNDER 30 MINUTES. Better Yet, have them give U one of the one of the xmax in stock, and they can reorder, U should pay it. If U have any Question no worries, ask. I live in Indonesia and have my Xmax for 5 years. After 150km on the stock seat, make an appointment, they in Gilroy CA and get you seat made to your ass. Dont but anything aftetmarket Yahaha,🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙏🙏.

At the Corbin Factory, it will be under 200, it a great ride to the factory, if ya take the back roads, lunch included and it was the first thing I did after buying a new bike, SEAT FIRST, they do a great job, they will work with you for as long as it takes to fit only your ass, no one else will enjoy it. I lived in SLO county for 18 years before moving to Indonesia, I have been here 5. Life short. Need is the neccesity of Invention. Dont get upset with the guys at the dealership, they dont make any money anyway, making it like most. U piss anyone off anywhere, you just making your life HELL. 🤑

i know this is an old post , but i just bought a 2021 xmax 300 from a 74 yr old lady. She bought it brand new from a dealership in Dallas , and they never told her anything about the 6 digit code. So she only had on key fob . I just found a guy in New York that i sent my SCU to , and he was able to retrieve my code with a code reader he has. He is shipping it back to me today and said.......Dont pay me until you get it back and try it. So waiting to get it back so i can try the 6digit code without the key fob . Will keep everyone posted when i get it back!!!!!!
