Single knock at start up

Something has been happening recently. At least for the past few months and is becoming more frequent. What happens is on cold starts no problems. Only after I have run it for some time in our hot weather, I let it stand for a short period, and then restart it, there is a definite, loud clank. Like an engine knock but louder. It just does it once and then starts. Like the starter clicks in with a loud bang. Has anyone experienced this noise? I appreciate the help.

It's not a noise I've ever heard on either of my 650s or any of those of the folks I've ridden with.

I hate to speculate on what it might be without actually hearing it. If I had to speculate then I would maybe look at something in the starter clutch assembly, maybe the torque limiter.

You bought it this year, it's under warranty still at this point, take it back to the dealership ASAP.

I bought it used with 9 k on it. I' ve put 13k on it since Feb. Change oil regularly. Use regular, don't baby it, ride most every day, and do trips every other month,

I've also noticed when it get to normal operating range there is slack in the drive. It seems to slip. And then catch before pulling off. No stumbles, no backfires or missing. Runs great with great mileage.

I have had it on occasion over the past 3 years with an almost instantaneous start. Like a bang an it is running at 1,200 rpm. A very fast start. I attribute it to compression release. 23,000 mi with no issue other than oil migration.

That is exactly what it does. I'm going to try and keep a detailed record of it. That will hel in finding the problem. I also have 23 k on it now. Thanks for the responce.

To add to this, have you noticed if it only happens after backing the bike up, then starting it? When the bike is warm, and ONLY if I back up the bike, I will get this 50% of the time. Like said before, it is compression release. Nothing to worry about.

The Burgman will not instantly pull away from sitting still. It takes some RPMs before she gets moving. Depending on how you roll on the throttle, It might seem like a slip. Is your Power button on, or off? I have only used mine a couple of times, but when it is on, and I take off from sitting still, it seems to catch much harder(as designed I am sure).

I've been thinking about this post and I finally remembered that this HAS happened with my bike. It's loud enough to startle me. But it hasn't happened in a very long time, over a year probably.

OK GUYS thanks for all the responces. I've ben very careful not to roll it backward when i parked it and started it hot. It hass only done it onnce in acouple of weeks. I hope that is the problem. Also I blip the throttle when stopped to increase RPMs and make it engage the clutch. That way it seems to take up some of the driveline slack.

Mine does it once in a while, I was at moto mechanic when he heard it he said it may be a sticking valve. Another thing mine does couple times a year is start ok, then a min later is will sound like its running on 1 cyl, it will stop and will start up and run with no problem, he said it may be in the ignition, I think its something to do with sticking valve. That sounds like a different issue. The one we are referring to is a single 'pop' when you hit the 'start' button. Your issue sounds like something much more serious.
