Oil Changing

Decided to do my first personal oil change on the 400, I've replaced the O rings and the oil filter then poured in 2 qts of 10w-40 oil. (for MC) Now when I check the oil while on the side stand the oil barely measures on the dipstick, but when I measure when the bike is on the center-stand I get a good full measure.

Now I've read and followed the instructions on the pdf file that SCTR posted for our benefit here and it calls for 2 QTS of oil. so to my understanding, the only way it is measuring for me is to do so on the center-stand or.. ugh.. I have to add a 3rd QT of oil? Guess what I'm asking is.. 2 or 3 qts? I'll stick with the 2 because everything I read says 2 qts. but I'll be a nervous nellie for the next few miles while I run down to the store for some kitty litter to clean up my hazardous waste mishap :roll:

Checking the oil on the side stand is no good the bike is leaning over and the oil level is 'away' from the dip stick - get a 'friend' to hold the bike upright and recheck.

Over filling the oil can be very harmful to the engine. The scooter must be upright when you check the oil. I do check my 650 oil level when it is on the center stand. It may be off a little, but as long as it is between the max and min marks I call it good. Technically, the scooter should be on both wheels and held upright for an accurate measurement. Sometimes that is just not practical though (I do not want to risk dropping the scooter). A oil level reading while on the centerstand is the next best approach.

An old piece of two x four under my side stand puts my scoot almost level and very easy to check oil level. :p

The manual is pretty specific for the 400..."Place the motorcycle on the side stand. Hold the motorcycle vertical. The oil filler cap threads are not run in but touching the filler hole upper edge." I think Beacho and NormanB had some pretty good suggestions. book also says oil and filter change 2000ml (2.1/1.8 US/Imp qt) oil change only 1900ml (2.0/1.7 US/Imp qt)
