Hello, I'm piecing a 03 burgman back together and I don't seem to be getting anything from the starter, in other words, when i turn the key and turn the kill switch to run i can hear the fuel pump prime like 3 seconds then i hit the start button and i get nothing..however i'm just wondering if this could be because i don't have a gauge cluster installed in it? I still need to buy one but i just didn't think that would effect starting the bike but maybe someone has tried this and they can tell me? thanks ahead of time for any help!

The kill switch, side stand, and either brake are interlocked with the ignition.
If any one of them is not right it will not start. The ECU must be plugged in and getting those signals too.
If the fuel pump is priming I would look to one of the 3 interlocks above.

The catch is that the ECU on these bikes communicates back and forth with the instrument cluster and it may decide that if it can't then it won't let the bike start. I know one member ran into a problem when the dash and ECU were not from the same year on a 650 he was piecing together with parts from several bikes. It would not surprise me if the 400 has the same issues.

Another thing to think about is the tip over sensor.

ok thanks for all the responses folks! Ill try and clarify some things.. I did read the procedure on starting the bike.. the seat is not installed either but i have that plunger on the seat pushed down, although i wasn't sure if that was for the light or for a starter safety switch..but i pushed it down anyways, i also had the side stand up, as it was up on the center stand at the time. I turned on the key and held in the brake and flipped on the run switch and like i said i heard the fuel pump prime but i get absolutely nothing to the starter when i hit the starter button..I did get a chance to jumper a battery box right to the starter its self and it turned over and almost started but then flooded and i haven't tried since..so I am still confused as to why it wont crank over from the switch other then the fact that the gauge is not installed..
