Ok so I'm curious about folks that have had their windscreen crack on them. I've just had my second Givi crack from the same place as my first Burgman.

Do you have a standard 650 or an Exec 650?

Was the windscreen stock or aftermarket?

If aftermarket which one was it?

Where did it crack/start from (as you would sit on the bike)?

Do you ride at speeds above 80 mph indicated frequently?

So I'll start. My first Burgman a '03 standard model 650 with a bought new Givi cracked from the upper left mounting hole and rode above 80 mph fairly frequently.

My second Burgman a '09 standard model 650 with a second hand Givi just started cracking from the upper left mounting hole and rode above 80 mph fairly frequently.

The Clearview on my Exec finally cracked last year after over 6 years and 100,000 miles (It was on my 05 Standard before I installed it on the Exec). Crack is about 1 inch long and from one of the upper mounting bolt holes. I drilled it to stop the crack from running any further.

Givi and Clearveiw screens that are made for the 650 and 400 are NOT interchangeable between models. I have tried to help a number of BUSA members who have ordered the wrong screen on eBay or on-line from a dealer stocking Givi products. Some of these members have managed to make the screens fit but only to find they cracked down the track.

The other main reason that screens crack is that the person fitting the screen has over tighten the screws, this scenario has been more prevalent when the screen is being swapped from one bike to another. When asked, has the fitting instructions been followed, the answer, in nearly all cases is no, the instructions are long gone.

Ordering the wrong part online, be it screens, top case racks, top and side cases is a common and often expensive for the person ordering the part ( shipping and restocking charges). This is the reason I do not have automated ordering. I talk to all my customers so that we are absolutly sure of which part is needed or wanted.

I was willing to entertain that idea on my '03 because it was my first experience with the Burgy but certainly not anymore especially with the hardware I used to keep stress off the center of the mounting hole on the '09. I believe the real problem to be Suzuki putting the mounting holes for the inner/top left/right at the edge so flexing under speed (Mine frequently sees 100 mph indicated) applies stress directly to the mounting holes. I haven't run the stock screen more than 14,000 miles but didn't have an issue with it no doubt due to the smaller size and reduced wind resistance.

My 08 has a crack. GIVI installed accordingly to instructions. Cracked at 35,000 miles. Unknown reason why the under frame bracket is also broken, both crack and break are on Left upper hole. JB-welded the bracket and drilled the crack. Have busted the ton + a few times, OK more than a few, ALRIGHT ALRIGHT, MANY TIMES, sometimes a few times a day. :D Average speed is 72 MPH.

I am sure you are both referring to speeds attained on a closed course. Professional riders only. Do not try this at home.

I had a Clearview that cracked. It began at the upper left attaching hole. I think it was mis-drilled as I had to put the shield in a bind to make that hole line up. I drilled a small hole to stop the crack but that was temporary as the shield later broke and went flying at about 80 MPH. That shield was a month out of warranty and Clearview offered me a 25% discount if I wanted to buy another. I chose to buy a Givi. I had no problems with the attaching holes lining up and the Givi has been distortion free unlike the Clearview. I have had the Givi about 5 years without any issues. Needless to say, I am not a fan of Clearview. Your results however could vary.

2007 650

Aftermarket

Clearview Lg. vented

Where did it crack/start from (as you would sit on the bike)?
From the left top bracket screw. It started very small (2") but over the past 2 seasons has spidered across to the opposite side.
The crack is diagonal so there are screws holding above and below the crack. The crack is low enough that I just used clear 2" tape and it's held fine for the past year.

Do you ride at speeds above 80 mph indicated frequently?
habitually.

yea, my cracked Clearview XXL FINALLY gave up the ghost and cracked in finality last weekend. I thought I'd had ends of the crack drilled OK but it snapped the drill holes. SOOOOOO, I just REMOVED it again (no repair will work now). It's cracked, as you look at it, on the lower right side from the lower hole up past the upper hole towards the right. (looking head on at it). I will be keeping the "gold wing" vent and will prob get a clearview XL to replace it. Right now I'm riding 'naked' with no windshield, but enjoying it with my full face helmet. It's not that noisy at all - no buffeting or noise with my Scorp neon green helmet.

One cheek sneek to the left side.

And when I say left side, I mean as you set on the seat, not looking from the front. :D I don't know what it looks like from the front, I am setting in the seat as I'm doing 75 MPH.

After mounting it and peeling the paper off thinking it was fine I found out I bought one much too large. I would have lived with it but it soon developed a crack in the upper left hole. I contacted Clearview and explained the problem. The screen was about one month old and still under warranty. Since it was cracked they agreed to inspect it and replace it if there were no other damage such as pebbles hitting it. Since I wanted to change the size to a medium at the same time it was replaced, Mark (I think that was his name) said he would have to talk to management after inspecting the shield. They were very nice about it and eventually I got a medium shield. I think the stress on the extra large at high speed has something to do with why they crack. I'm very happy with the medium screen although I wish it was about an inch taller.

I bought a Clearview XL (or maybe a XXL, can't remember) with vent and it worked great for me. No cracks whatsoever...

Until I got some hair on my chest one day in Southern Md. and popped well over a buck (indicated) into the wind. Yep, upper left side first, and it was flexing like a cat in heat! I slowed down and babied it another 50 miles or so, but by the time I got to my buddy's house, the upper right started cracking too. The left side was about 2" and the right about an inch or less. I pulled it off and asked my boy to bring it back home for me at a later date, fearing it would split in two by the time I got home.

1st time riding home without a shield, and I discovered why sport bikers lean into their cowls when riding hard, as well as the Burg can hit 132 (indicated) sans shield (of course this was on a closed, pro only, track... lol!).

Called Clearview, and they were nice about it, but I was out of warranty, because, although I bought mine new and unmounted, it wasn't from them. They stated that there was a "revision" in the XL and XXL series to make the middle "thicker", and suggested this may have been done due to reports of the shields cracking from the speeds Burgmans, apparently, were capable of and were being ridden at. They also offered me a 25% discount on a new shield, at the time, and also suggested I look at some of their "slightly blemished" products to save even more. Gotta give them credit! Who else offer's 25% off of their discounted products to someone who didn't buy directly from them in the first place?

Someone here suggested drilling "stop" holes, which I did when I got the shield back, and I used it the last 2 winters as a "winter shield", adding a vinyl overlay (picture) to the front and 3M mounting tape to the rear to strengthen it just a bit; also keeping my speed down so the windsail wouldn't crack more. It's held up pretty good, thus far, but it will be replaced this season with the "new" version of the shield in XL size.

I think it's a matter of wind resistance bending and flexing the larger shields. Perhaps that's why cruisers are the only bikes with as much shield area, and they are supported on each side, halfway up or more, to keep them rigid. Goldwings have a lot of cowl and, actually, pretty short shields, comparatively. If the vents weren't closed at these higher speeds, maybe the screens would never have cracked. With the clearview, I lose about 15+ mph (max) compared to the OEM, and again as much compared to no shield. Maybe that wind resistance means... SLOW YO TAILS DOWN!!!

Givi windshield was on when I bought the 650 with 20k on it. Now has 33k on it. A few thousand miles ago I was on the interstate going about 75-80 when I came upon one of those high wind warning areas, where the windsock was horizontal. That windshield flexed a whole lot through that area and I noticed soon after that the shield was cracked at both upper mount points, but much worse on the left side. Drilled stop holes and ordered a replacement from Kiwi Dave. Stop holes kept it from spreading, still haven't gotten around to replacing it. Have been meaning to use the old shield as a test and cut 3 inches off it to see if I liked the lower height, before I replaced it.

Left side (as you're sitting on it) seems to be the weak point.

Yea as I said, I went thru it as well. ClearView offered me a discount as well. I haven't taken them up on it. I will prob get a blem's shield and move my vent to it. But it won't be an XXL (I think they said they don't make the XXL anymore anyways). So I've been riding without the windshield and just enjoy sitting there and getting the 'push back' from the wind.

Dude, I think the wind you're riding though must've BLOWN YOUR MIND, LOL!!

I've done the "sans shield" thing, and though it might be a bit fun in the middle of summer (what, another month or two???), it's no fun with 40degree nights and 20mph wind thrills! Not to mention the freak thunderstorms.

Okay, so it's no fun if you typically do 75+mph (legally, of course, Mister Law Enforcement :blackeye:).

:edit:

Oh, you're in ARIDzona... Never Mind!
