As a youngster, my family used to vacation at a cottage in Dam Neck which is a 'suburb' of Indian Neck which, in turn, is part of Branford, CT.

I'm sure the 'Neck' convention refers to some geographic feature.

After two minutes of research, the term Neck refers to a narrow projecting land mass coming off a larger land mass. The projecting part implies it will always be associated with some body of water. The nature of the midAtlantic and New England coasts lends itself to lots of these types of features.
