This is going to be more difficult to describe than it would to engineer it.

The end game is a rack that would, with ease, pivot or cantilever from the rear (normal) position to a forward position that occupies the current pillion position. In each position some form of locking pin would secure the rack so that position could be changed without tools.

This would confer some advantages:

1. Better weight distribution (when you do not have a pillion passenger).
2. You could pad the front edge of the topbox and make one mother of backrest.
3. From an aerodynamic point of view it may reduce drag and make the bike less susceptible to crosswinds.
