That can be a tricky question. About like asking what underwear is the best.
First of all, What are you looking for in a tire?
Is it longevity? Bridgestone Hoops.
Ride? Michelins any of them.
or Price? Shinko
All are good tires and perform well in all weather conditions. I have had them all on my 400 and have not been disappointed.
You will definitely get about 1500-2000 miles less out of the Shinko but if you change your own tires they will save you $$$.
Currently I have the Michelin City Grips on mine with 3000 miles and they look like they'll last another 4000+. All rear tires will wear out twice as fast as the fronts no matter what brand you buy!
........so mix and match along the way and find YOUR perfect set of tires!
I agree with Scootereno. There is no one right answer. I've run Bridgestone, Michelin, Shinko, and Metzler tires on the back of my 400. I've run Bridgestone and Metzler tires on the front. As he mentioned the front tire will last around twice as long as the rear tire. All worked fine as far as riding is concerned but I was disappointed with the wear characteristics of the Shinko. I've currently got a Bridgestone hoop on the front and a Michelin Power Pure on the back.
How many miles should I get from my tires? I am just now at 3,000 miles on the bike. I know there is a service requirement at 4,000 miles. I hope I don't have to buy a new tire at that time, though I am surprised that the tires on the bike at this time haven't dry rotted from old age. These are the original tires that came on the bike back in 2006.
With the OEM Bridgestone hoop I get about 7,000 on the back tire and 16,000 on the front. That said, mileage folks get varies widely. Lots of variables affect it like weight of the rider, riding style, ambient temperature in the riding area, material used to surface roads in the riding area, and so on and so on. You may get more than I do and you may get less.
I'm partial to the Michelin City Grips. The best set I've ridden on the 400. I now have Michelin Pure Power SCs and am impressed so far - we'll see. I'll never put another Hoop on it - I promise (unless that is the ONLY tire available in an emergency - hey, I'm real)!
