The last few rides we have taken, getting Angel's new silver Burgman 650 broken in, I have been checking the speedometer with my Magellan GPS. The Sepdo is approximately 10% faster than the true speed.
Today we made a hundred mile roundtrip ride to MacDill AFB at Tampa and I checked the odometer accuracy. It only has a 1.44% error! The indicated Trip B mileage was 103.0 and the GPS distance was 101.52. I would have thought that the odometer error would be close to 10%. My Gold Wing has about a 4% error consistent in both the speedometer and odometer. Thought this might be of interest to other Burgy owners. :)

Indeed thanks for the heads up Bill. I had seen the other posts about the speed difference using the GPS. But no one has mentioned the odometer difference. This may be useful in calculating how far you can travel on a full tank of gas. I own a Garmin E-trex Legend but havent has a chance to mount it on the Burgy yet. I have all winter to solve that mounting problem.

This one of my few gripes about the Burgman. A beautiful digital speed display that is so wrong as to be nearly useless. It reads about 10 percent high. I believe it is a misguided Big Brother effort to get us to drive more slowly. Clearly they do not understand that when a data source (the speedo) is clearly wrong people will soon learn to disregard it.
Buy a Speedohealer, set it to -9.0% and have good MPH. I think it is only fair that you will reduce the apparent mileage because the effect is to reduce your miles traveled by the same amount.
The Speedohealer has no effect on performance because the computer works on RPM and engine load so roadspeed is not a factor.

I have a Speedohealer too, and I agree that it's wonderful to have an accurate speedo.

It does however have an effect on performance.

In short words: The transmission changes up and down according to the indicated speed, and refuses to select "5" till the speed reaches 50 km per hour. No problem when 50 indicted is 45 true, but annoying when 50 indicated is 50 true.

If you don't believe me, try adjusting the speedohealer to +10% and feel the change towards a relaxed early up-shift ride, like the "Power" button effect reversed.

If you let the CPU get the unaltered signal and only the speedo the altered signal, you can avoid this, but then the speedohealer is no longer plug-and-play.

Alan,

Actually, if you go back about three years - and you're an "old-timer" here, and thanks for your detailed maintenance write-ups - I (for one, among others?) did mention this. During a SpeedoHealer discussion, I stated "checking of the odo, and most of the time it was reading about 1.5% high, to the nearest tenth." Here's the specific post, in which I discussed the different errors in the speedometer and odometer, my SpeedoHealer correction, and my manual odometer correction factor after setting the SpeedoHealer: viewtopic.php?p=271038#p285047 . I reiterated this in a subsequent post: http://www.burgmanusa.com/forums/viewto ... =0#p307077 .

Hope this helps.

Alan,

My apologies - I didn't look at the dates involved, until Kory just made that post! At the time, no one was an old-timer on the board.

A big "D'oh!" to myself.

Are all you guys dealing with the 650 and not the 400? I realise that the 400 has the same issues with the speedometer being wrong, however some of the things stated re power kinda confused me and I would like comment on power effect on the 400? I also would like my speedo running correctly just cause it bugs me to do running math.

Based on the bike model info on the right, and that it's the 650 Forum, and speaking for myself, the comments look to be pretty much 650-based. It wouldn't surprise me, however, to learn that the 400 has similar traits in this regard.

And it bugged me, too, which is why I put the SpeedoHealer on (although a ton of folks say, "Get over it, take the 10% off - the first digit - in your head," or words to that effect - certainly a valid position, too.) On my Valkyrie, I added a $25 Sigma bicycle "computer" for a nice, extremely accurate (once calibrated) digital readout, and ignored the tiny factory dial speedometer. On the 650, that huge digital speedo, staring me in the face with its inaccurate info, drove me nuts (but then, I have a touch of OCD); I "got over" the worsened odo problem, because it wasn't right in the first place, and it wasn't staring me in the face.
