Has anybody out there got motorcycle camping experience, Where you roam freely and set up tent On public land. I have done some reading on this But I am unclear about what they mean by public land etc. I want to load my two Man tent And meander around backwoods etc

Gave up tenting after I got out of the Army! I take my RV now and have camped on public lands with it. Public lands means BLM or National Forest land where camping is allowed. I know there are lots of areas in the Black Hills of S.D. you can camp.

I do a lot of motorcycle camping and love it.

on public lands, you just want to make sure that you are allowed to camp there and get any permits if necessary. Pay attention to camp fire rules, especially right now with all the dry conditions out there.

As for camping on private properly, like churches and other places, I always ask and it has a positive outcome most of the time.

I use a hammock most of the time, but also carry a one person tent for when there is no way to pitch a hammock.

Just be smart about it.

I love getting lost on my dual purpose bike on those less traveled roads.

There are also many Hostels for bikers/hikers that can be found as well.
One step up from tent camping and usually a place to do laundry. ;)

Thanks all...So if your roaming down the interstate and you see some baron land that isen't posted 'No camping' can you just set up a tent?????...Not interested in campfires!

There is lots of confusing info on these sights...BLM very limited on maps.

Pick your route and rest areas carefully. Make sure you get well off of the road when you camp. I had a friend choked, stabbed, and tossed off a cliff with a plastic bag over his head by some California MC bikers. His mistake was not paying attention to his surroundings. He is alive but suffered major brain damage from his once in a life time motorcycle camping trip.

No, any old land could be private. Doubt if there is very much BLM land in the plains states.

Not too off topic but have any of you watched SHUG on You Tube - good stuff for hammocks and the like and if you ain't interested in the camping element they are amusing and actually represent good presentation/instructional technique:

Okay so I'm figuring this stuff out.... Basically if it isn't BLM land Which means Bureu land management, Then it is mostly private land. BLM In Nebraska Only shows about two locations And that's near South Dakota border.. Through research, It seems like state parks are the best way to go, And out here on the Great Plains, We have hundreds of them For about seven dollars per night. I would prefer to go this method And hope not to run into a Hells Angels gang Who's going to give me a thrashing. If so, I hope my can of mace would do some Eye damage so that I could Scoot away!
