It was a good day, so I tore open the CVT case (2008 B400) for a long-overdue belt cleaning. All went smoothly, apart and cleaned and reassembled in about half-hour. Not much belt dust for 10 months, I think my vent mods helped.

Until I saw that goofy retaining ring (for the variator) on the workbench. Oh well, do it all over again

Good to know you had a spare one of those on the bench.

Oh... wait. :p

Nuttin' happened... In fact, I started it up after I put the belt and variator and clutch on, to check it.
I'm not sure the retaining ring has a function. But I reinstalled it anyway.
Runs like a Swiss watch again :)

I have beciome convinced that the retaining ring is mostly an assembly aid--to hold the rollers in place during initial factory assembly. If you bend the tabs inward they will hold the rollers in place, once assembled and in operation the centrifugal force of the rollers bends them back out of the way...

Must be a 08 & newer thing as I don't remember any ring on my 400. Or maybe I just left it on the bench & it got lost. Anyway sold it after 46k+ miles without any ring. ;)
