I have not attempted to do this yet as a new owner but do you really have to take off the floor board foot rest just to drain the oil. Is there any short cut?

I'm assuming you have a 650.

No, I found it's not necessary to remove the left lower cover to change the transmissiton oil. I fill my trans. with an oil can in the over flow hole untill it runs out, I wait a while (about 30 sec.) then give it a few more shots with the oil can to be sure . This really speeds up the time.

You only need to take all that off to allow for better inspection when changing the Transmission oil.

The engine oil is very straight foward, just remove the center hump cover (1 screw)
