Yesterday I did a small ride of about 40km each way.
when I stopped at my half way point and I was under the seat, I heard an odd sound, this is stationary with engine off.
sounded like air escaping somewhere?
I suddenly smelled fuel, then it stopped, I have a spare fuel can under the seat, I checked it. Seal is good no dripping nothing.
I drove about 5 km to where my daughter was to give her a ride home, and it happened again, this time I opened the fuel cap and there was a lot of pressure behind it.

is there an over pressure releife built into the gas cap or something like that?

There are 2 pressure relief valves on the 650. The noise you heard is very common. Sometimes referred to as a 650 fart.

The valve is under the right quarter panel and vents excessive vapor pressure from the fuel tank on non-CA models (we have a carbon cannister after the valve to trap the fuel vapors and ours doesn't make that noise. This is completely normal.

California - our taxes may be high, but our scooters don't fart.
