The real story
This from a New York newspaper:
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said yesterday that the NYPD will be mobile at this summer's Republican National Convention - with 300 cops darting around the city on racy new scooters.
"Those scooters will give us a lot of mobility during the convention," Kelly told the City Council's Finance Committee yesterday.
"But [they] also will enable us to, I think, do a more effective job policing parades, events, demonstrations in the future with fewer officers."
The motorbikes are a version of the Italian Piaggio BV200 modified with NYPD specifications.
Cops will be able to go as fast as 75 mph, and the new scooters are sturdier, more powerful and have wider tires than those currently in use.
"We've tested them," NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Post. "They're more substantial and even though [each] will be assigned to one officer, they can carry more than one."
