I haven't seen them yet, but my nephew said he was watching the news when they were showing the Republican Convention in New York and they showed the demonstrators and the Cops lined up. He said there were about 40 Burgman 650's lined up and ready for action. He told us at our bike meeting tonight and I think the Burg has gained a new respect in the group. I ride what the NYPD rides. Cool.

Very cool! I've thought for a long time the 650 would be a great police bike. If you ever see a web article on it, I'd love to have the link. Thanks for the info.

BV 200

i've seen the nypd on bv 200s this week in manhattan, in one case there were about 30 riding together. last week, when i picked up my new burgman 650 from a dealer in manhattan, i pulled up beside an nypd on a bv 200. he complimented the burgy and asked the top speed. i thought it might be a sting operation

btw, the bv 200 is made by piaggio. piaggio is the parent company of vespa, gilera and now aprilia and moto guzzi

new york cops useing 650's

 I saw it on Fox News and couldn't hardly belive my eyes. I told my wife i thought they were silverwings or possibley Brugman's. You would think the city would want the best for their boys in blue. Speaking of the 650 of course. However i'm glad to see any kind of scoot make the grade. For what they pay for them cruisers around here, they proberley could buy three or four Burgman's. 8)
WAY TO GO NYC!!!! :D

The real story

This from a New York newspaper:

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said yesterday that the NYPD will be mobile at this summer's Republican National Convention - with 300 cops darting around the city on racy new scooters.

"Those scooters will give us a lot of mobility during the convention," Kelly told the City Council's Finance Committee yesterday.

"But [they] also will enable us to, I think, do a more effective job policing parades, events, demonstrations in the future with fewer officers."

The motorbikes are a version of the Italian Piaggio BV200 modified with NYPD specifications.

Cops will be able to go as fast as 75 mph, and the new scooters are sturdier, more powerful and have wider tires than those currently in use.

"We've tested them," NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Post. "They're more substantial and even though [each] will be assigned to one officer, they can carry more than one."

Huh

There I was thinking that New Yorkers had taste! That scoot is just - well PANTS!!

They nearly made the right decision just nearly.

The 650 would have made the best steed for a city cop.

Actually, the smaller, more nimble BV200 scooters make sense for law enforcement duty in the city.

I'd think that the Burgman 650 would be a great machine for state police forces doing highway patrol. Easier to mount and dismount than the typical Harleys they use, much less expensive to buy, and a performance envelope that is reasonable for that purpose.

I am not saying it ain't nimble!

Heres what the Brit police call nimble and are using increasingly in communities:

The 650 is more of a replacement for the police motorcycle. Looks like they were after something quite a bit smaller and maneuverable.

Although it looks like BMW has a lock in this arena with a bike with design features needed for this type of activity (vastly increased electrical system, storage, protection bars, etc.)

Those 'gobigs' look like serious amounts of fun - well apart from the price!

Not legal on the highway in UK (thankfully!!)
