I just got a 2013 burgman 400. The manual reads that it is best to keep it around 4000 rpms for the first 500 miles. That is only about 37 mph. Does anyone really do that for 500 miles?

Yes! Definitely do what the manual says. Don't go hard on the engine during break in. Also, when you do your first 600 mile service, do NOT use synthetic oil. Use regular oil until after about 4,000 miles. The reason is for the pistons and engine to break in properly.

I'am surprised you are getting 37 mine only did 30,
rode it home 100 miles at more or less that then
started to use about 4500rpm and after about
250 miles used about 5000 rpm that was more or less ok
till it's first service and I could use 6000, ended up with
a nice sweet engine with plenty of power and mpg.

My 1st Burgman was a 400, and I drove it home in normal traffic, (55-60 mph). However, I did do my 1st oil change @ 200 miles, then again at 600 miles.

No issues.

I did my 650 the same way.
