OK you mechanical whizzes out ther, I thought I was pretty
good but this thing has got me confused....

In looking at the service manual for the 400, on page 1-5, it
states that for the engine and transmission, use 10w40
oil and on the final gear, use 90w Hypoid gear oil....ok, I got
that....but when you turn to page 2-11, the manual restates
the engine/transmission oil to be 10w40 and shows the
pictures on the check level and drain plugs on the trans-
mission....then where is the final gear and where do you
change/replace the 90w final gear oil ??? Am I stupid or
am I just missing something here ??? Help......!!!

The engine/trans oil is in the crank case, the final drive is in the long gearcase on the side that runs from the engine to the rear axle.


when it states engine/trans it is not really the case because the trans has no oil in this case

Final Gear service help

No, you really need to look at the Suzuki Service Manual, it goes
thru how to change the engine oil and filter, then, it goes to the
rear clutch assembly and goes thru how to check the oil level in
that assembly and states that if it is low or is dirty and needs changing,
then to add or change the oil there with the same type 10w40 that
was used in changing the engine oil. The final gear oil service is not
even addressed except to say that the final gear oil capacity is 190ml.
Its so not clear !!

Hey MisterGib I noticed that you got some replies to this question on another board. Do you still need more clarification ? I have a 650 but I also have the service manual for it. I can look up the info pertaining to the 650, I assume that there similar to some degree.

Final Gear

So far, no one has been able to answer my question, I think that
for someone to understand where I'm coming from they may have to
be lookin at the same edition of the manual that I am. The manual
says to use 10w40 not only in the engine but ALSO in what they call the
transmission, (located at the left side of the rear wheel). They do not
reference that as the "Final Gear" in this manual. Where is the 90w
Hypoid gear oil used then.....the manual says it needs to be changed
at 7500miles and says to use this 90w oil but never demonstrates
where or how to do it ??????

This may help on your oil change,

Pic of 400 engine / tranmission - no oil in there.

Pic of 650 final drive oil change - may help you to find 400 drain and fill plugs, Australia doesn't get 400 so can only go with info I've found.

Final Gear service

Alright Greg !!!!!
That picture you attached verifies that my new 2003 manual is in
error.....what your pic said was the Final Gear, my manual calls
the transmission .....and where you illustration states to add the
Hypoid oil, my manual says to add 10w40 oil......
