There are a lot of options from what I see in the different biker mag's .
What ever you put back there will have to help. I would only suggest you mount them as high as possible. In fact if I ever got a top box , that would be my main reason

There is another product that flashes our 650s brake lights alternately, then together and then steady but I can't find the link right now.

I am getting ready to install a trunk from a local scooter shop ($85). It is wired with 2 brake/running lights and an additional running light. The added height will make the lights more visible. You get the added benefit of extra luggage capacity as well.
http://www.kriss.com has a running light brake flasher device that flashes the turn signals. I first saw this on a motorcycle cop and found when he hit his brakes, his rear turn signals flashed and it was quite impressive.
