Been thinking about what I have been hearing and reading on cordless electric lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other outdoor equipment.
Anyone here use that stuff?

There is one that interests me more than the others and that is the equipment from Ego. It gets real good reviews.

What I am thinking is to go with both a lawn mower and snow blower that all uses the same batteries. I've been resistant to using smaller battery powered tools because I just don't use the tools all that often and the batteries would end up sitting a very long time between uses so possibly will degrade from long storage. But a battery powered lawn mower and snow blower setup using the same batteries would mean no more than a week or two sitting and the same batteries would be regularly used every month or even every week of the year, getting the best use out of them.

I currently have a 2 stage snow blower and a JD X300 lawn tractor as well as a self propelled Troy Bilt mower. My wife pushed me to get the bigger machines thinking we needed them. I only have a 1/3 acre lawn and a 45-50 ft 2 car wide driveway. We are on a corner lot so more sidewalk to clear when it snows but nothing I wasn't able to handle with a single stage snow blower that I had before it broke. And I've been on a crusade to replace heavier gear with smaller, lighter, more nimble gear. Getting older makes it harder to handle the big machines. I know I am only sitting on the JD but it's still a bigger machine than I need and maintenance happens more often than I would prefer.

I don't live in Minnesota, where sales of NEW gas powered lawn equipment is being outlawed. But Iowa is just over the border so it is possible we won't be all that far behind. I also know that even if a state outlaws the sale of new vehicles, gas vehicles of any kind will be around a long time until they wear out (likely not in my remaining lifetime).

Thoughts? Opinions? Reviews? (I've seen reviews online so only personal reviews please).

Already have corded electric SMALL power tools. Like a corded hedge trimmer that I haven't used yet (gift this Christmas), and a corded chain saw that works really well, and a corded Greenworks garden tiller that I really like, as well as a corded string trimmer/weed whacker that also works well. The string trimmer still has a bigger electric motor, at .75 HP, than most others I've seen even though it was bought nearly 40 years ago and it's still going strong! Though the string trimmer may need to be replaced soon due to its age. If I do it will likely be with the Ego unit.

So not really needing any review of smaller tools like drills or saws or such that all use smaller than the 56+v batteries of the big tools. Mainly interested if anyone uses battery powered mowers or snow blowers... consumer/home owner class of bigger equipment (not commercial).

Yeah, I know about some battery powered equipment fires. Not really very common in view of all other causes of home fires. Kind of rare actually. The kitchen still is the more dangerous for that. And I've also read of gas mowers catching fire though that is even less frequent.

As mentioned, looking for PERSONAL experience. I've been researching many brands and models. My yard is rated as 1/3 acre but I think that also includes the space taken up by the house so not much need for even the small-ish 42 inch gas riding mower I have. I feel that is too big. Kinda like if I owned a Humvee just to go shopping down the street. Kind of ridiculous.

Bought a Roboi 40 Volt weedwacker. Got the extra battery too for $56. First battery lasted maybe 7 months, second one maybe 10 months. Both out of warranty.
Ordered 2 more aftermarket ones and 2 years later one still takes a good charge but the other gives about 20 minutes.

In all cases, the batteries were full charged, let cool down for a few hours, used till the low charge light came on, let cool to room temp before charging again.

So, the cost of the wacker and extra batteries is over $400.

Bought a Stihl FS131R for $420 and not looking back. It takes about a quart of Ethanol free regular gas per mowing of my sons yard, about $1.50 each time.....

If you notice the SlickDeal postings are from just last week.

I’m a sucker for a deal…but I passed.

I’m new to the Ryobi 18v line of hand tools ….. and they have paid for themselves already.

Just got an 11 Tool Combo Deal for $250 with three batteries …. now I’m looking for things to fix.

I have the ego mower, my son in law/daughter also have it, and the same battery system. I've only had mine for 1/2 a mowing season, Am pleased with the performance of the mower, but it feels a little like they could have made the "handle" thingy a bit more robust battery is EXPENSIVE and I cannot buy one from a store, must buy a spare/ replacement on line, battery is warranted for a year separate from the mower, I have answered some question you might have had, so please answer one of mine. What is this snow stuff you speak of?

From what I was seeing the Ego batteries should have a 3 yr warranty, but the mower is 5 yrs.

You already know what rain is.
This snow stuff is like your rain... only frozen as it falls out of the sky and sits on the ground a LOT longer than rain. Even though a heavy rain like you've had several times last year does sit on the ground a long time.

And while that frozen stuff is sitting on the ground it's like your heavy rain sitting on the ground. Sometimes more slippery and sometimes the same (like when rain is on slimy mud). And it can be just as deep. Like measured in feet once in a while. But more often measure in many inches. 🧜‍♂️🚣‍♂️

BTW- I have read some good reports for some of the aftermarket batteries on Amazon. But be careful since there are also some of those that say more Ah than they really are in actual use. Or so I've also read. But you are right. Those things are very expensive. Not so bad if they last a long time but kills some of the benefit over gas power if they don't.

Noticed that Lowe's has a sale on a few of the Ego mowers. The one I've been looking at has $100 off their regular price until April 6. That actually ends up being a very good price so I ordered the LM2102SP with one 7.5Ah battery and Rapid Charger. One Lowe's had 2 in stock for pickup at the store, but not the closest Lowe's... just on the other side of the metro area so not too far. Should be able to pick up later today but family is coming over so will pick up tomorrow. Due to the special sale price I don't get my military discount on top of the sale but it's still a good price without that from what I've researched IMO.
