I noticed better mileage on longer trips, maybe because of easier riding, or less stop and go. Plus a warmed up engine and drive train may also help. My best (2 up) was 55 and my worst was 42, average 50 mpg.
Last, it may sound odd, but me and my son got our best mileage while filling up at the same gas station. He rides a GXR 600, maybe the gas pumps were off.
