Just bought a 650K8

Hi I am in the Uk and I have just bought a 650 K8 from 2009. It has only done 2350 miles and ispretty much as newt. I think I paid slightly more than I should have but it was the color I wanted most (black) and has the two accessories I need and good quality versions, a GIvi top box and higher higher screen.

As/a precaution I intend to change the oil and filter myself. I have no mechanical experience at all but I have watched the YouTube vids and it seems straight forward.

Is the anything I need to be aware of or need to be particularly careful about?

Is there any other routine maintenance anybody recommend that I could and should undertake myself at this time?

Many thanks for your help.

Only thing to make sure of is that you get an oil that is compatible with a wet clutch. Other than that as you say it is a straight forward procedure.
It's pretty easy, I did mine for the first time a week ago. Advice from my dealer was to make sure you get the right oil bolt. There's another one for the transmission gear oil in the back. You don't want to drain one and fill the other.
Congratulations and welcome from Tampa, Florida, Howard! Unless you KNOW that your bike has had its 600-mile service, you might consider changing all of the fluids. Tranny oil needs to be changed at 600 and every 7000 after that.

Thanks to LeDude for creating the following site, which is simply breathtaking:

This may help new member to BUSA better understand.

TIP: Use middle oil level hole to fill oil in transmission instead of top oil filler hole, this make job easier/simpler/cleaner.

Most BUSA member know this tip.

Welcome to the forum, I to just purchased a like new used 2007 650 Burgman and I to just changed all the fluids for the first time. I used the LeDude's mechanical instruction procedures that are on this forum, very will described and pictured, ie. easy instructions to follow. You didn't pay too much if the scooter is what you wanted, color is very important to me as well as the correct farkles if they are what you wanted. Use what ever oils you wish as long as they meet the engine requirement, several here use the Rotella T6 5W-40 Synthetic for the engine and transmission and Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 for the rear gear oil. One gallon of Rotella T6 will do both the engine and transmission with a little left over, Good Luck.
