Let me start by saying I'm a newb to the scooter world so bear with me. I'm buying my first scooter on Sunday and I'm looking to install a top case/back rest. I know most people will suggest a brand name case like GIVI (which is fine) but I'm wondering can any universal top case be installed or does it have to be bike compatible? And are there any video links or forums that give detailed instructions on how to install these trunks? Thanks in advance guys/gals!

]Buy a Givi. You'll also have to buy the special Givi mounting base for the Burgman. It's about $100. To mount any other trunk, you will have to buy the flimsy looking Suzuki rack for the burgman that costs about $300. You can buy the Givi mount and a decent sized trunk for that price, and the Givi mount is built like a Russian tank. I've had one on my ex-Burgman 400, and mounted one plus a 46 litre Kappa top case (givi's cheaper line) for around $300 Canadian.

Here's a shot of my old scooter when it was up for sale. I'd added some reflective red tape to the Givi mount for extra visability, and a LED running/flashing brake light underneath. Warning, you will have to drill four 3/4 inch holes in a plastic trim plate on the scooter. Fortunately Suzuki Corp. marks and dimples the location of the holes on the underside of the plastic trim plate.

My neighbor gave me a no-name top case and its mounting plate, made for a Silverwing I think.
Some drilling, a few spacers, some scraps of bar stock later, it was on my Burgman. No big mystery, just have to be able to measure to match Burgie's tapped holes. :)

Oh yeah, I removed the plastic trim piece, didn't see the reasoning to ruin it, you can't see under the top box anyway

I fitted my Bestem 2012 onto my 400s using the mounting plate it came with, some spacers cut from scrap aluminum pipe, and a few nuts and bolts I purchased.
Just took a bit of thinking, a little time, and the drilling of four holes. All for under $100, including box purchase.

For my 650E, it could hardly have been easier. Spacers were provided with the 2012 for this, and the mounting holes for the existing backrest (removed) were used. I just had to drill one additional hole in the mounting plate, and supply the necessary length bolts.

I have also previously manufactured custom mounts from 1/4" aluminum plate to fit two "top-boxes" (Bestem 929's) as panniers to have a three box system on a C50., giving almost 150l of usable storage. (not pretty, giving a wide stance, but I wanted function over form for touring, and easily removable when not required).

Truth is, you can fit just about any box you want to, to just about any bike. It depends how much you really want a particular item, and how much effort you are willing to put into things.

I hope this helps.

GIVI Rack they don't break. GIVI box is good investment----my E-46 has over 500,000 miles. Cheap= bolt yellow $15 Stanley tool box to spoiler---I have a Stanley tool box, too, only mod plywood stiffener bolted on floor of box.

Givi stuff also fits without a lot of monkeying around.

I git my topcase from www.twistedthrottle.com and if you tell them the model and cas - they will figure out what you need and send it all to you....very easy to do

As several folks have said, you can fit pretty much any case you wish. I bought the Givi case but did not buy their adapter plate. Instead I took a piece of 1/4" aluminum, drilled and tapped holes to attach the mounting plate that came with the case, and drilled holes to mount to the tapped holes in the scooter. Take off the piece of rear trim and you can see the nice marks so you know where to drill the holes for mounting. ( used a Forstner bit but a step bit would work fine as well) This made for a very rigid mount and the same thing could be easily done with other brands of top box. As a side benefit it gave me a place to mount my Ad-More light bar without having to make additional holes in the tupperware. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like more details.
