That slit is NOT right. Someone or something smashed a hole in it or it rotted out. Any good muffler shop can weld a patch over it. Ask them to do a stainless patch.

Sorry, can you elaborate? I can’t tell if you’re joking :) but mine is an ‘05 in case you’re not!

dang it i think you’re razzing me too, Mike!

Found this thread where one guy said there was already a hole for drainage purposes, but Dave is never wrong so… :(

I suppose I’d have to take the muffler off before taking it to a muffler shop, eh? I kinda want to just not worry about this issue til spring bc i want to consider it “done” for now…would it be bad to go many miles on the muffler as-is?

All it will do is maybe lean out the air/fuel ratio a bit and be noisy.

If you were closer we could weld it up today.

Like covering bullet holes in Huey's during Vietnam. A friend said he had to sometimes remove 5 and hammer out a #10 pear or peaches can.

Yeah, those patches didn't need to look pretty. No need to worry about pressurizing the aircraft at altitude, or filthy exhaust trails around the rivet heads or proper rivet spacing and layout.
Those HU-1 were work horses, just get her done & get her airborne.

I've seen holes with "discoloration pattern" around it like that before, there also appears to be a small "lip" around the hole, but back to the question, it still needs to be fixed, and you should probably set a few nickles aside to replace it, We can see the damage on the outside, but what kind of damage is inside that we can't see

Or its a weep hole to let water drip out. Being 'Dimppled' out makes sense.

The exhaust pipes on my Dodge Little Red Express truck, my avatar to the left, has 1/8 inch drain holes dimppled at the bottom of the stainless steel "STACKS" to allow any rain to drip out.

it's possible , if other mufflers have similar, but I would think a weep hole would be a a low point, then again, it may acdtually be a low point on the inside
