Long story short: going for an MRI tomorrow then back to the ortho's Monday for his decision on what to do with this really painful hip. It started acting up again last spring when a host of other, "seemingly" unrelated problems hit (no one has yet to be able to figure any of them out and they're trying to blame them all on stress). However, last June it started really acting up and by July, I was having trouble walking. Doc said, and I agree, that I have a very, very limited range of motion right now and sometimes if feels like the hip is about to collapse on me. (It's rather emasculating to to me to have to have the wife put one of my socks on me in the morning because I can't flex the hip enough.)

So, I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's had any type of hip surgery (ortho said it wasn't my back). I was going to ride to work tomorrow but even sitting on my beloved 400 was a bit painful.

I do hope someone has some encouraging news about hip surgery/hip replacement surgery. Again, a lot will depend on what the MRI shows tomorrow but doc was throwing around some really scary words.

Tell me how long you were unable to ride. Tell me how fast you were able to get up and walk some (I start night classes on the 26 of this month, plus they moved me to a new school - I do tech support - so I'm still trying to get that set up and I'll be having a lot more kiddie duties too).

Just give me some encouraging news folks - I'll need it!

Maybe I can the surgery scheduled on the one year anniverary of my shoulder surgery.

I have had two back surgeries and pain in my left hip that I thought was related to some scoliosis in my back. It turned out to be bursitis and a little physical therapy along with some simple exercises helped my hip pain a great deal. Probably not your problem, but I thought I would offer it just in case.

Well, went back to the ortho today. He took another series of x-rays. He was not positively impressed to see more damage in the six to eight weeks it's been since the previous x-rays.

So, now I need to set a date for the replacement. I'm looking at early November. I figure it will take through the end of the year to get me going close to full steam again. Plus, I won't have to burn sick/vacation days for almost three weeks - we get off for three days at Thanksgiving and about two weeks for Christmas. I would like to be moving pretty good by Christmas.

I'll also drop off the bike and get a bit of maintenance done - just don't want to deal with it right now (valve check).

I got lucky. My doctors had been telling me that my left hip pain was due to my R.A. for 10 years. I finally had enough, my hip was hurting so bad I was willing to have a total hip. As part of the prep to getting the surgery I had to see my Rheumatologist. He did a complete exam on my hips and legs and told me that my problem was not my bones in the hip but was being caused because I didn't have good blood flow into the hip. Told me to see a vascular surgeon and one stent later, I am pretty much pain free in that hip.

I had been misdiagnosed with my hip pain for 10 years. Folks, get a second opinion! I wish I had, I wouldn't have suffered for all those years.

at least ask him if he can take the stiffness from your hip and put it somewhere useful, you know, since he's going to be in that area anyway, :study:
