7700 simply means the crew has declared an in flight emergency. this is done for any reason at the discretion of the crew. it allows ATC to easily identify them on their radar screen, make that flight a priority, and clear the airspace to get them on the ground as soon as possible.

3 codes used/recognized all over the world are
7500 - hijacking
7600 - [total voice communication] radio failure (personally used this on time)
7700 - [in flight] emergency

there has been an increase of unruly passengers in the last couple years. know of any scientific data offering an explanation why?

yep, an one way to test it is use it on the ground, them yaller trucks show up purty quick!,,, so I been told.
