Machines cannot yet do an intellegent job of translating. Even the best machine translators have trouble with idioms and regionalisms, and Googles isn't one of the best.

Classic example (which may be mythological): The Hot Line between the US and the USSR (which was actually two teletype machines on each side, not a "red phone" as often shown in movies and TV) was due for an upgrade, and it was suggested that money could be saved by using a machine translator rather than having to keep Russian speakers on 24-hour duty on our side, and English speakers on theirs.

The following phrase was sent through the machine:

"The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

After conversion from English to Russian and back to English it said:

"The wine is good, but the meat has spoiled."

The Defense Language Institute is in no danger of being replaced by a computer.

And ever wonder why Moses has horns? http://www.goporta.com/rome/SanVincoli.htm
it was supposed to be "rays" coming out of his head and Michelangelo learned it to be "horns".
