Basically you paint the plastic part with real silver or copper to make the whole surface conductive, then it can be electroplated just like metal.
The commercial process starts by etching the "B" part out of the ABS surface and replacing it with nickel, making the surface conductive so it can be plated.
Chromed bathroom equipment is made that way, as well as plastic reflectors for headlights etc.
