It has been recommended by people who have tried it and scorned by those who haven't.

Let the fun begin!
WHAT FUN??????? You think that this has not already been discussed extensively already.......???????????? I ran a car tire on the rear for 11 years with no problems........!! Go ahead and just do it.

Dark siding is a technology still in its infancy considering the history of rubber air grippery. We desperately need men who like Daniel Boone Jaque Cousteau Neil Armstrong and rosie Odonnels first boyfriend with the testicular fortitude and moral courage to go and continue down a path that may lead to destruction or to great advancement, that path hindered not so much by resistance from asphalt; as from other opinions as facts are slowly gathered. There will be tragic failures along the way ie rosies boy, but the pioneers among us will rise again and again and succeed and advance the whole lot of us or go out a true hero giving no ground in fighting for what he/ she believes is right

I'm new to this. Haven't been on a bike since 1986 when I had a Honda Elite 250, I have two questions. So please don't flag me.

1. Why you call it the darkside?
2. Why can't you put a car tire in the front?

Let me remind you, I'm new.

Postman and others that want to know, there are many Darkside topics over on the 650 area. It was coined Darkside long ago in a far away.......... :D

The front tire on a motorcycle needs to do many things at the same time. On two wheels you need a round profile to keep in contact with changing road surfaces. The rear tire is mostly along for the ride.

Please do a search for darkside or Car tire and read some.

CAR Tire on rear

Thank you for the replies and valuable info. Wasn't trying to bang a hornet's nest, I just figured it would be a controversial subject.

To put a car tire on my 400, I am assuming we are talking about a bias ply and not a radial?

Darksiding is more a 650 than a 400 thing. Radial tire is what is used & I tried it on my 400 a few years back. Never could get it to seat so I gave up & went back to a MC tire. Once my rear tire is worn on my 650 I may give it a try again.;)

It's simple. You put a car tire on your scooter and you die. You don't even need to ride the bike or even sit on it, you just die. When the tire seats on the rim you drop dead. I know its true, I read it on the Internet.

I may have missed it, what year 400? Pre 07, no tire for the USA market is made that will fit. But 07 up there are some. I will not guess as I do not have a 400 and may provide a wrong answer.

Car Tire on rear

Aloha,

It is a 2007. I have ordered a 155/70/13R and it will take 2 weeks to get here.

I am hoping to talk the Suzuki dealer into removing/ reinstalling the wheel and I will take it to an automotive garage to mount tire. Can't wait to see the reaction when they discover it needs about 100 psi or more to seat.

Hope both places will do it as I am not the most mechanically inclined

Guess that's why I'm still alive as 120 lbs & still couldn't get it to seat when I tried it on my 400.:laughing5:

Got my Hercules 155/70/13R tire installed on my 2007 400. Large tire dealer who sold it to me would not mount it on a MC rim. HD dealer mounted and balanced for $43 total. Took them a long time to get it to seat. They would not use high PSI but leaving it out in the sun for several hours did the trick.

On Kauai, an OEM tire costs $185 + 85 wheel removal and install + 45 mount and balance with tax, etc. it is over $330.
If prices never go up in the future (ha ha), I would have to do this 4 times vs one time for the car tire for a total of $1320.

I removed and reinstalled the wheel myself this one time. It was not too difficult thanks to the videos provide through this wonderful site. I paid $60 for the tire + $43 labor for a total of $104. That is less than 1/12th the cost of OEM.

Can't tell any difference in the handling at all and I'm sure I will get better wet traction as it rains daily here.

You paid just 1/12th the cost of oem?? Oem tyres in the UK only cost from $61 and fitting is free at the dealer you buy from. It's illegal to fit car tyres to road bikes here in the UK due to safety concerns. I think it's the same throughout 'Urop' now.
