I've got 400 miles on my Burgman. I clean the rear wheel after riding and notice black dust, what I am assuming to be from the belt, on the rear wheel. Is this from the belt breaking in so to speak and will this dissipate over time?
That is carbon from the rear breaks pads. Nothing to worry about. I myself clean it once in while, because with time and heat it gets more difficult to remove. Enjoy your Burgman

not sure what the source is since that is one truly nasty area on this bike, I am sure it will always come back, and pretty darn sure it will bother you less in the future, kind of like when you first met you didn't fart in front of your g/f eventually you held her head under the covers, then finally ,don't even bother to check to see if she is in the room to enjoy it with you
It is dust from belt wear, and is 110% normal. A "rubber band" CVT is pretty tough duty for the belt, that is why Suzuki says it needs to be changed every 14k miles--though many including myself have gone well beyond that.
