OK, having read that, start to bottom of references and footnotes, in its entirety, let's see, how to put this past a female moderator-ess (who will be tied up until Wednesday)

Okay, I read the article. That's 5 minutes of my life wasted. What does all that have to do with riding motorcycles? Really?

Modern America and Its Discontents:
The Ride-Hard, Die-Free Fantasy of Bike Week!!
I want some of whatever the Writer of that Article is on...

Sorry Folks but I Live Here...Too many people have Retired and moved down from up North to places like Daytona, New Smyrna, Ormond, Holly Hill, Cocoa.

These People have Screamed and Complained so Much about the Noise, Crowds, Rowdy Behavior Etc of the Three Main Groups that Poured in 80% of the Areas Gross Income over a combined 7-8 weeks spread out over the year..(College Students for Spring Break, Bike Week, and Black College Reunion) that they got there OWN people Elected to the City Commissions and started MAJOR crackdowns on everything...Vendors aren't even permitted to start selling until the Event Officially Starts and must Close Shop when it Officially Ends...they used to set up a Week before and run a couple of days after.

Over the Last few years they have Driven the 4 weeks of Spring Break to Ft. Walton Beach/Pensacola where even over the Objections of the State the Local Police are Refusing to Arrest or even Ticket Underage Drinkers...the atttitude is "Its for 4 weeks and they Spend Too Much Money and were not gonna Drive them off like Daytona Did". All they make them do is pour out there Drinks or Confiscate unopened ones.

They Cracked down on Bike Week..NO Spiking the Throttle, No Wet T shirts...No Flashing...No riding on a lot of the Streets...it was so bad last year some 30% of the people and Vendors/Parties moved to Orlando where....while not complete Open Arms...were more lenient than Daytona.

And SUDDENLY LO! Daytona has a Fiscal Crisis and a lot of Merchants who made the Majority of their income from those two groups in particular are closing up shop leaving Vacant Stores and No Jobs.

The outcry of that was so bad this year they decided to try and Lure the College Kids back and ease up this coming year on the Bikers...

College Kids...when polled...said NO WAY...Ft. Walton Beach was Much Nicer and Cheaper and the Bikers???

A lot of the People at Bike Week have a bit of Disposable Income...Heck..they drive Harleys, GoldWings, High Dollar Stuff and they found they liked the amenities in Orlando more...Bike Week in Daytona is In Trouble...

Question is "Can Daytona Salvage It?"

Took Less than Five Years to Pretty Much Destroy it.

First of all, Mr. Pratt gives that lunatic Freud a lot more credit than he deserves. Secondly, if you want to talk reversal-rituals, why not include the ultimate modern-day examples - all those 'gay' take-porn-and-perversion-and-slap-it-in-the-public's-face 'festivals'?

I do not, by any means, support some of the kinds of things that go on at bike week, but we know who the underwriters are (beer and tobacco companies, etal), and pretty much expect that of them. These outrageous sex-in-the-streets parties, however, are underwritten by companies who want to be recognised as main stream (Volvo, Subaru, UAL, IBM, Wells Fargo, Motorola, etc., etc.). And yes, you may point out, to my shame, that I own both a Volvo and a Subaru.

From a gay member who's not sure what you're talking about--do you mean Gay Pride Festivals?

Brennard thats what it seems like to me...However even though I am a Friend of Dorothy as well I Really didn't see it as being worth my time to Respond to it.

However the Promoters of Bike Week Wish those attending were even just a Fraction as Well Behaved as the 150,000 People who attended Gay Day at Disney this past June....

And the Merchants/Hotels in Orlando are letting the City Council/County Commission know that they Don't give a [email protected] what the Southern Baptists think and the Politicians WILL "Be Nice" and "Kiss the Ruby Slipper"...Estimate was approximately $400,000,000 was spent over the Week Long "Gay Days" event this year.

And not ONE report of Drag Racing down I-4, Drunken Brawls, Shootings, Stabbings, Stolen Bikes or People getting Killed because they weren't Wearing a Helmet..(11 Deaths last year at Bike Week by the way).

Enough of being PC...

Spot on Norman. I went to Bike week twice. The second time I didn't even ride into town. Too many pickups, trailers and drunks for me! Mebbee I'm just too darned old to enjoy comparing leathers and loud exhausts?
