I rode an RL250 Suzuki trials bike in the mid seventies, when trials was looking like it might get a foothold. The first gift I bought my (future) wife was a 1974 125cc Penton Cafe-Motocross (which was actually a trials bike with higher gearing). My last trials-type bike was a Honda TLR200, I think it was around 1984/5.
I really prefer the older style trials bikes because they made ideal woods 'play' bikes. Today's trials bikes are too trials specific. Hard to shift on the fly, extremely limited range, etc. Kawasaki tried to get back to the play bike with the 250 Sherpa, but it was really too bulky for log-hopping.
