What year did ABS become standard?
Was it offered as an option prior to becoming standard?
If so what years was it optional?
Thanks, Bill...

Looking at the Service Manual it became available in 2009 as an option and I believe it became standard in 2011.

That would be for the 400's. On the 650 ABS is standard on the Exc model which came out in 06.

it is not standard for the 400 as of 2013, it's optional, there are several versions of the 400, 400A(ABS), 400S (Sport). just my two cents. I wonder though, if would it be possible to install the ABS kit into the standard 400.

This is a 400 (2007+) thread so I assumed he wasn't asking about the 650

In the US the ABS is standard - only model offered - so it appears other world markets have other options.

I was an ABS non believer until 2 years ago. I was following a line of cars in the rain on another bike I owned at the time. Someone in that chain of cars decided to slam on his brakes and the whole bunch of us did likewise. Even though I had left a 3 second interval, I still got on my front brake too hard and lowsided. I have been riding over 50 years and this was the first time I needed ABS but it would have paid for itself in pain and suffering for me that day many times over. After that accident I told my wife that I would never buy another bike without ABS. It is there for just that type of situation. I have ABS on my Burgman 650 and hope to never use it. But it is there if I do need it.

Good thing abs is, one can't always choose which section on the road to brake on -- a couple of times i got either my back or even the front wheel locked on a loose gravel and i already portrayed fall in my mind when the bike found its way back. But then the guardian angels whispered that they wouldn't ride with me on another bike without abs :D

Ditto re ABS necessity. Painful low-side on my '07 400 a couple of months ago due to locking the front tire during panic braking to avoid a cage that pulled out in front of me. The brakes on these bikes are over-matched to the bike's weight and traction, IMHO. Went out and found a great deal on a slightly used 2011 400 ABS

Knock wood, I have not needed the ABS in any of my riding. However, I do have a tendency to get on the front brake a little hard from time to time, so I am very happy to have the ABS on my 2011. Anything that can help keep the rubber side down with me on top is appreciated! :D
