I worked till 7 PM tonight, an oddity to be sure, and then after work went out with friends for a non-alcoholic drink (I was riding my Kmyco 500 Xciting scooter home). I am in full ATGATT gear.

I's about 8:30 or so and about 50 Harley's pull out and start to go around me. That's fine and for a brief moment I'm following the tail rider. We pull up to a light and I go to the right to go around the slow moving group.

 Next thing I know I'm in the middle of the pack. Which would not have been that bad expect for two things that pissed me off, first was at as the group was stopping at a light one of the bikes cuts in front of me making me have to stop short. At a stop light I even yelled over to a guy next to me "I feel a little out of place." He laughed.

Second was that after the light goes green on of the riders starts to direct traffic around me. Really? Okay, I get it. You don't want a scooter in your group. I can even understand if I broke some unwritten motorcycle gang law and rode with the group uninvited. Your directing traffic to go around me isn't safe. We are on a busy road Dude and I was in this lane first.

I just shake my head at the guy and the second it's safe for me to move over I do so. I blow past them without much issue muttering "assholes" under my breath.

Am I wrong to feel this way?

Hey, just hang back a ways and collect what falls off. Sell the parts at a swap meet. Now the biker ladys that fall off, that's another story.

Re: A little bit ticked....or Houndguy joins a motorcycle ga

My original post might have been a little confusing so I want to clear it up. It's a 3 lane highway. I was in the right lane to begin with they they pulled into the center lane to go past me. I fell in behind the tail rider to go past a car and then they pulled, en mass, into the left lane. I stayed in the center lane and past most of them. As we all stopped at a light they merged into my lane.

That's when one of the group started to direct traffic around me. I was in the right groove of the center lane so the bikes could pull up side by side. The second I got chance to pull over into the right lane I did and I scoot on past them.

Hope that clears up the picture.

I guess what bothered me was the safety issue. You want to pass me fine. Do it in a safe matter is all. Were all in the same lane when they are trying to pass and that just isn't safe.

Never Ever Ever Break the Chain! Code number one of a gang/group riding together.
You unknowingly broke in line and they were just correcting the situation.
I know it is dumb but it was explained to me quite explicitly by a biker gang once before. :blackeye:

For real Scootereno? lol. Well I didn't realise they were all that special  What a joke. And it sounds like they sacrificed safety trying to correct this terrible mis-hap.

It's more fun on the 650 to just yank on the loud handle and leave them behind.

Yup, I was aggressively told not to ride in their group if I wasn't wearing their colors. ......so much for biker brotherhood. :?
They are that special in their own minds and even dress to impress...themselves. 8)
Safety, we don't need no stinkin safety!

I find Cruiser riders a bit odd. On my BMW road bike, I wave at everyone and everyone waves back. When I am on my scooter, maybe 50% wave back. Most of those guys are on Harleys or some other cruiser. Once a Harley rider gave me a one fingered salute. I just laughed and waved at him in as dorky of a way I could muster.

Here in TN I generally get "the nod" or "salute" from 90%+ riders. Scooters just do not show up very often here. Heck, whenever I see a BMW bike or a Versys I about drop a load in my pants. Guess it depends on where you live and if there are "true" gangs around. If most of the riders are wearing colors, I would back off. I would not want to try and push into their territory at all. But hey, it all worked out ok (i guess) and nobody got killed!!

Let me offer another opinion that has nothing to do with bad Harley riders at all...

As Houndguy pointed out, there were about 50 riders in the group. He also pointed out that he had moved to the right lane...and passed quite a few of them...but not all of them, and especially not the leaders. That's a key point and it wouldn't have made any difference what kind of bike it was that they were riding or that he was riding.

Large group rides like that are like a caterpillar moving along. Where the front goes, the rest will follow. Partly because only a few in the group know where they are going and the rest don't want to get lost or be responsible for holding things up and the group to get split up...and those behind them getting lost. The middle of the pack will also have the newbie riders generally, if the group leader is smart of what they are doing.

And actually, if the group leader was smart, he would've split the group into about 10 groups to keep the size of each group smaller and have less chance of something like this happening. But sometimes you publish a ride expecting a handful of riders...and get swamped. So you as the leader, do the best you can under the circumstances.

The rider directing traffic around him was just doing what he was supposed to do under the circumstances. In a group that large, you'll have several other experienced riders who help keep things flowing smoothly. What he did was actually safer than if he just let a free-for-all develop because someone will do something massively stupid like trying to pass to catch up with the main group when it wasn't safe.

It's one of those life lessons in riding a bike and encountering a large group ride. Just understand the dynamics of what is happening and get out of their way...either in front or in back...but not in the middle. :)

And before you throw stones at this explanation, consider the position you're in if you decide to lead a group ride. That's why when I lead a group now, I only will take 3-4 riders with me at the most. I'd much rather just ride with one more person. It's so much easier...

I think we should be careful of what we say as what we see in others is just a lesson for ourselves to correct in ourselves called Karma.
