I'm looking at a used 2006 Burgman 400 that is cosmetically clean and seems to run fine. There is a growl coming from the front on deceleration that I cannot figure out. I'm also considering a 2007 Burgman 400 but there is a substantial price difference for the newer version.

I know that the motor on the '06 is the SOHC 385cc motor while the '07 has the newer DOHC 400cc motor. Is the 2007 version that much better to warrant the large price difference?

I own an 06 400 and I've put several hundred miles on a friends 08 400. I can't tell that there is a whole lot of practical difference in them from performance and comfort standpoints. Buy the one that you think is the best deal and that you like the looks of the best.

I have a '06 and I love it. Someone else on the forum mentioned a growling in the frontend and it turned out to be a loose fender. Why no see if a mechanic who is familiar with Burgmans will have a look at it. I know there are differences between the 2003 - 2006. And the 2007 - present but don't rule out the '06 just because it has a little less horsepower. I love mine and it has no problem getting up beyond the legal speed limit....so how fast is fast enough?? Go with what your gut tells you that you will be happiest with. Both are great. If it is just a matter of price, go with the older one. It will get you where you want to go just as nicely as a newer one that costs $1000 more. Don't forget to look at mileage and service on both, as well as tires.

The '06 I'm looking at is very clean and has 19,750 kms (about 12,250 miles) on the clock which seems pretty low and it came from a local dealer which is nice. The difference in asking from the '06 to the '07 is $1,700.

12,500 is not a lot of miles. I have over 38,000 on my 06 400 and it is still going strong. If it has been well maintained then it should have plenty of miles left in it.

One thing you should be aware of on the 06. Some of them have a tendency to use oil when ridden at high speeds for extended periods. They don't use it in the classical way but seem to draw it through the crankcase breather into to air filter. It's not a big deal but if you go with the 06 then be sure you keep an eye on the oil level when doing a lot of highway riding at 70+.

Like I mentioned they don't all do it. Mine doesn't. Just watch it until you determine if it does and if so keep the oil topped up on long highway trips. Failure to do so could result in a ruined engine.

Prices here in Canada are somewhat higher than in the US and often out of touch with reality.

Well I just checked my oil level too and it hasn't moved since the last oil change, so I am betting that you won't have much of a problem with the oil on the '06. Still, if you purchase that one, keep up with maintenance and oil changes and it should last you a long time. Many of the 400s I have read about oil problems on have had the problem within the 12,000 mile window you have on the one you want to purchase. I personally do not ride my scooter above 65 very often and not for long because I don't ride on freeways very often. Freeways are only good for getting you from point A to point B in a hurry. I would prefer seeing the scenery.

Thanks everyone for all the help, but in the end I have agreed to buy something other than a Burgman. I wasn't able to find the right deal.
