650 Exec Shimming Windshield Info Request

Hi Guys, I watched the LeDude000 windshield removal and shimming video, and it was great thanks. Unfortunately, it is only applicable to the standard 650 and the Exec movable windshield seems to have a different mount. I am reluctant to start moving the plastic cover over the moving bracket until I have an idea how it works and if I can actually shim the windscreen. I use the scoot to get to work and it will be a mission if I get it half completed by Sunday night as I start at 7am and transport would be an issue.

Can anyone help with some info on this, a 2005 650 Exec.

Just to clarify, I took the windshield off thinking it was a 30 minute job and don't want to put it back till the job is done. I can ride like this for a while till I receive a reply to my question. Although my first ride with it off made me aware how cold it is with no protection in winter.

It is just that I don't want to immobilize the bike by taking the rest of the Tupperware off till I know what I'm doing and how long I need to do the job as I have not got another way of getting to work easily.

Another question is about the rubber mounting grommet's that I found put back on the bike with out being placed through the windshield by the previous dismantler. Is this something that other owners have found by default, after dealers work on the bike. In other words is that semi-acceptable practice on the part of a dealer to not extend the rubber through the plastic windscreen but to just place the screen against the rubber with the screw and washer clamping the screen in place.
Do they generally take the screen off to do other maintenance such as a 30,000 km check, which, I have just had completed.

I played with this on my '08 Exec. It was pretty easy. I had some thick neoprene washers that I inserted between the windshield and the rubber well nuts on the arms. Not a big deal. The real trick to it was getting screws long enough but not too long. Too long will cause the up/down mechanism to jam when there's wind pressure against it.

On my 2011 Exec, I haven't bothered as it did not seem to do anything for me. For the hottest days of summer I have a cut-down OEM w/s that I install.

It all depends on your height and how much buffeting you get. That's also heavily dependent on your helmet.

Yes, the plastic grommets do need to be in place before putting in the screws. They distribute the stress to keep the w/s from cracking.

Windshield Shimming Up-date for the Exec model 650.

Well I have just finished the major work to shim my windshield and had a test run. Still a few refinements to a couple of brackets but otherwise complete. Was a big improvement to riding smoothness and I am very happy with what I did to make the change. My start point was a standard windshield that the previous owner had added an extension to the top. I was unhappy with just putting a spacer between the mount and windshield as I felt it made the mounts weaker than I was comfortable with.

I made four spacers from 20mm stainless square extrusion x 40mm Long and bolted them on at the original mount point holes on the sliding bracket on about a 45 degree downward angle. This allowed me to adjust the angle to fit the windshield mount points and lowered the windshield slightly. I had drilled the tube on one side near the end and on the opposite end I drilled on the other side. I also added a bracket to the top mount point for the lock flashing to account for the change in angle of the attachment screw that holds the flashing on at the top. I made this from a strip of aluminum strip to which I drilled a hole for a longer self tapper screw than the standard screw to allow for the change of angle created by my extension blocks.

I now have a windshield that has a larger gap at the back for airflow and a windshield which, is slightly forward of the normal position. This reduces buffering on my head and flexing of the plastic shield in the airflow. Down the track I have enough room to fit a solar panel in the gap to charge the battery while still allowing for extra airflow.

I was concerned that the brackets might make a noise in the wind but this has proved unfounded.

I will post some photos next week to show what the job entailed.
